Students at Emma K Doub celebrated last week’s Hour of Code by integrating everyday curriculum with computer programming practices. Each class participated in this celebration. Our class teamed up with Mr. Dulberger (Grade 5 Magnet) and Ms. Weddles, to complete an integrated learning experience that was “out of this world.” Our classes worked in collaborative groups to conquer unique (space focused) challenges that encouraged computer coding, physical fitness, reading, and writing. For these missions, each group utilized the EV3 Lego Robot as their designated transportation vehicle. The first task was to travel to the “International Space Station” and program the EV3 robot to answer the question that was provided. Next, the robot needed complete the travel mission through the “galaxy” or our obstacle course, and arrive safely at “earth.” While coding the robot, group members also participated in a variety of physical activities. After each groups arrived safely at “earth,” the final task included comparing and constructing the text structure of two articles (focused on the history of space travel) through written expression. During this learning experience, we were also visited by a Lego Education representative, Erin Sowa. Erin participated with each of our students.Chris Kopco (WCPS Planetarium/STEM Resource Teacher) also made an appearance and engaged in our coding mission. In addition to this activity, our class had several “Eagle Coders” who shared their programming knowledge as they helped teachers and students throughout EKD. Along with this coding experience, our class completed a Minecraft Coding Challenge with Mr. Funkhouser.
Our class worked extremely hard to create a movie experience like no other. Each book club worked as a team to transform their reading experience into an exquisite movie day for our classroom and school. Recently our class worked in book clubs to progress through leveled novels and engage in daily discussions. Students worked on numerous reading standards during this process. Specifically, we focused on ways to describe in depth, characters, setting, and events in a story or drama. We also made connections between the text of a story or drama and visual/oral presentation of the text. In addition to the production groups determined a rental fee (scholar dollars) to charge others who are interested in watching their movie. This fee included money for each member of the cast as well as stage manager, Ms. Rowland and Mrs. Mandley. During our classroom premier, our class wore pajamas brought a stuffed companion and we enjoyed some theatre treats. Dramatizing a text is a great way to build comprehension and engage in the reading process. Try it out with your child or children at home. If you would like you may also record it on his/her iPad and we will share in class.
